The movement is growing

We are ensuring the fight is justice-first.

Tiada.Guru began as as small grassroots news updates and research idea after we discovered a revolutionary High Court case filed by one of Kota Belud's bravest daughters in late 2018. We thought, "This is it. This is the moment it will end. But we know the Ministry and its corrupt officers. If reform will ever to happen, the world must know the total & complete truth."

From an idea born between a few MOE whistleblowing teachers, we knew we could never turn back if we started. But it was an easy decision, in retrospect. It is a now or never moment for these students and so it is for us.

Our Campaign is unique in fighting for 1) actual justice, in Court for abused & neglected students, 2) powered by MOE whistleblowers from the inside, 3) ready to take the fight to its needed conclusion in policy reform. These unique traits gives affected families a true sense of hope & a strategy to fight power with power. Awareness is not enough: we know we can change the course of history.

Since our soft launch in late 2018 and our proper launch in late 2020, Tiada.Guru has been lucky to have been featured on Astro AWANI's Consider This, AWANI Pagi, Malaysiakini, Free Malaysia Today, SAYS, ORANGKATA, and others. We have also partnered internally & externally with AWAM, Undi18, WOMEN:girls, MCCHR, PACOS Trust, Borneo Komrad, the Sabah Human Rights Centre, Bentarakata, the Parents Action Group for Education (PAGE), and others.

You will be joining a relatively revolutionary campaign that knows hope is not found, but made; evil is not brave, but shielded; and injustices are not just words, but lives lived.

As you join us, we hope to train you and help you find your power and your voice in this fight. Activism is a collaborative vision that demands policy change, justice, and the truth. If you are as fired up as we are about two of Malaysia's most historical High Court cases, then apply to volunteer with us. Tiada.Guru is just the beginning.

You will be joining Fiqah Roslan, our Panel Representative. Fiqah began a career in journalism in 2015. Her experience as a reporter catalysed her interest to delve into advocacy and activism through writing. Along with journalist colleagues, Fiqah is a writer and contributor for Borneo Speaks, a platform founded by Sabahan journalists as a form of alternative media to tell Sabahan and Borneon stories. Most recently, Fiqah is a Research and Content Engineer for Undi Sabah.

You will also be joining Sharmila Sekaran, our Peninsular Director. Sharmila is a senior litigation lawyer, child rights advocate, and Voice of the Children co-founder & chairperson. By day an advocate & solicitor, Sharmila is one of Malaysia’s most dedicated advocates to protect the rights of children. By night, Sharmila’s fearless policy & legal analysis have set the record straight on Astro Awani, Malaysiakini, the Malay Mail, Free Malaysia Today, Sky News, the Washington Post, and more.

📱 The social media educator volunteer

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok

Why Volunteer as a Tiada.Guru Social Media Educator

We are growing fast and this story has an incredibly powerful message: "What would happen if a young girl from one of Malaysia's poorest districts defeated the Federal Government in High Court and her fight was to reform the Ministry of Education?"

You will have access to a wealth of knowledge, resources, data, and information to create a sustainable grassroots-gone-viral social media campaign.

We are all volunteers here. Our team has already built a small, but relatively fertile social media presence. You will join us as we are moving upwards and with even larger projects. The #MakeASchoolsASaferPlace movement has created a spark that will not go quietly into the night and you can be at the forefront.

Our social media presence, with over 2,500 combined followers:

Volunteer Tasks

  • Produce posters aligned with the Tiada.Guru style (a style guide will be provided) using the data & content from the Tiada.Guru website.
  • Produce single-image news article highlights (example ⤤) using a provided template.
  • Organize messages, replies, and/or comments to our social media accounts and write a draft response.
  • Stay current on social media trends and learn the relevant times when the Tiada.Guru Campaign should share our work.
  • Attend once-a-week meetings and discussions for assignments.
  • Be aware of the Tiada.Guru Campaign as a whole.

Work Environment

Tiada.Guru is born from volunteers. Let us help you to help reform this education system together.

Communication & Work: All volunteer work will be remote & online. We will train you in our work to become the best volunteer you can be. We work in Telegram for short messages and Notion.so for both the assignments & delivery. Notion is easy to learn; it is similar to Google Docs. We like to be direct & to solve problems: honesty, about the good and the bad, are key for our success. We also realize no one was born an activist: we are all learning and our communication reflects that: we work better when we learn together.

Time Management: Because all work is remote and relatively asynchronous (not everyone will be online at the same time), you have full freedom to set your hours. The hours can be flexible / change over time. We only request you give yourself a "weekend":  as you complete the 6 hours a week, we hope to not hear from you two to three days a week. Rest, be free, and come back afterwards.

Trust: At times, your work may encompass unannounced projects. We do require total confidentiality and we will always inform you if your work is not yet public. This confidentiality means not divulging any details until the project has been announced.

Requirements

  • A computing device with internet: most of your work will be writing, so use the tools you love.
  • Proficient in Tiada.Guru's social media choices: Twitter ⤤, Facebook ⤤, Instagram ⤤, and TikTok ⤤.
  • Some experience in design or visual art: brochures, posters, graphics, etc. The more experience, the better. We will provide you free access to the paid version of Canva Pro, an online image editor. However, if you have another tool you are comfortable with (Illustrator, Spark, etc.), you are more than welcome to use it.
  • Fluent in Malay and conversational in English.
  • At least six hours a week of available time.

✏️ The Legal & Campaign
Translator volunteer

Campaign Statements, Legal Briefs, Litigation Explanations

Why Volunteer as a Tiada.Guru Translator

We are growing fast and this story has an incredibly powerful message: "What would happen if a young girl from one of Malaysia's poorest districts defeated the Federal Government in High Court and her fight was to reform the Ministry of Education?"

The education, civil service, and human rights legal case of a century in Malaysia is quietly unfolding at the Kota Kinabalu High Court in Sabah and Tiada.Guru is at the front seat.

Your writing will directly reach thousands of Sabahans, Sarawakians, and Malaysians following these cases. Likewise, your writing is very likely to be quoted in national news outlets including Malaysiakini, Free Malaysia Today, and Sabahan outlets including The Borneo Post, The Daily Express, and The Vibes.

Writing can be rejuvenating for the hopeless, terrifying for the corrupt, and a firestarter for the courageous. It is strategic communication and we intend to exact the maximum impact for all stakeholders.

Below are two examples of our longer writing pieces, though the websiteas a whole showcases our writing style, tone, and intent:

Volunteer Tasks

  • Translate legal briefs & litigation explanations for a public audience from Malay → English and English→ Malay using the legal dictionary (as needed).
  • Translate campaign statements from Malay → English and English→ Malay.
  • Attend once-a-week meetings and discussions for assignments.
  • Be aware of the Tiada.Guru Campaign as a whole.
  • Be alert on current issues relevant to the Campaign and to share during team meetings.

After achieving victory over 1) the Federal Government’s Striking Out Application, 2) her Discovery for Evidence Application, and 3) her Further & Better Particulars Application, one of Malaysia’s youngest plaintiffs is set for an explosive High Court Trial.

Not only will Siti Nafirah’s searing claims of extreme teacher absenteeism, misfeasance in public office, and Constitutional violations go to trial at High Court, but so will the Federal Government’s decades of unfulfilled reforms that have led to these claimed events. To the Ministry of Education, your time is up. Tiada.Guru is about to collect your exam papers and the world will see your results.
